Family Orientation

New Student & Family Programs offers family orientation programming during all first-year and transfer student orientation sessions. The family orientation program runs concurrent to, but separate from, the student orientation program. Through a variety of presentations and programs, family members will learn more about areas of their student’s college experience. Attending orientation is a great opportunity for family members to ask questions about Florida State University and truly understand their student’s transition to college. Our family orientation program is designed to be very informative and engaging, and we encourage all attendees to be present for the scheduled orientation presentations and events.

Family members will receive a detailed schedule upon arrival along with a variety of other publications and resources.

Here are a few topics explored during family orientation:

  • University Housing
  • Financial Aid
  • On-campus dining
  • Academic life at FSU
  • Campus safety
  • University Health Services

Please note that due to space limitations, scheduling and FERPA, family members are not permitted to attend academic advising or be in the room while students register. Families are able to discuss their student’s schedule with them immediately following orientation.

Family members or guests attending orientation will be responsible for their off-campus accommodations. For information about lodging in Tallahassee, visit www.visittallahassee.com.

Students can pre-register family members for orientation through their myFSU portal. If your student forgets to register a family member prior to orientation, they can be registered as walk-ins during your orientation check-in. The cost of the family orientation program is per person and includes your materials, your orientation leader and any meals included in the orientation program (the two-day summer/fall programs for first time in college/lower division transfer students include an orientation meal plan giving you access to four meals throughout the session). If you have any questions, contact New Student & Family Programs.

Participate in FSU Chats

Florida State University hosts scheduled online chat sessions for new students and family members to talk with current students and representatives from University departments and programs. Participating in FSU Chats is a great way to get your questions answered while learning all about life at FSU, including University programs or services. Chat topics and moderators change frequently; learn more about upcoming chat events by visiting http://facebook.com/FSUFamilyConnection/events.

We look forward to seeing you at orientation!
