Inclement Weather Ready

In the event of inclement weather, it's always a good idea to be prepared! At FSU, we strive to keep students and their families informed and connected whether there's a severe thunderstorm predicted or a hurricane in our forecast. We would like to share some basic items to keep on hand and some key communications outlets to monitor in the event of inclement weather.

We encourage students to assemble to following items:

  • Water – purchase water or utilize water bottles/storage containers to store tap water
  • Ready to eat meats, fruits, and vegetables
  • Canned soup
  • High-energy foods (peanut butter, granola bars, trail mix, crackers)
  • First Aid Kit
  • Manual can opener
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Portable, battery-powered radio
  • Cell phone and back-up charger, if possible
  • Cash
  • Fuel, if they have a vehicle
  • Prescriptions/medicines for one week
  • Important documents, including driver’s license, hard copies of prescriptions, health insurance info, etc. in a Ziploc bag

If students find themselves in need in terms of food, the Food for Thought Food Pantry is a good resource to get much-needed supplies. The Food for Thought Food Pantry is located in the Dean of Students Department, University Center A, Suite 4100. The pantry is open from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday – Friday, excluding a university-wide closure. Students should bring their FSU identification card. There is no application, but students are asked to sign a waiver. The pantry is FREE for all FSU students.

As a storm approaches, please stay tuned to the following communication outlets for updates, information, and the status of the University:

In the event of severe or inclement weather, New Student & Family Programs and Family Connection will use our Family Connection listserv to keep you informed. We will share information about university operations and potential shelter information as available. If you or your student is experiencing an emergency, please call the Florida State University Police Department at (850) 644-1234.

There are a variety of privately run, FSU family-centered social media accounts--these can be a great resource for information sharing, but please do not rely on these alone. Official university-run accounts will be able to give you the most accurate information.
